Theodor Schwann- 1839
Theodor Schwann was a German physiologist, which is a scientist who studies living organisms. He discovered cells that surround and protect the axons of nerve cells. Today these cells are called Schwann cells. Later, while assisting the German physiologist Johannes Miller in the Anatomical Museum of Berlin, Schwann discovered pepsin, the digestive enzyme in the membrane tissues of the stomach in animals.
Schwann took the work of Matthias Schleiden one step further and applied the Cell Theory to plants and animals. In his publication of 1839, Schwann stated that cells are organisms, all organisms consist of one or more cells, and the cell is the basic unit of structure for all organisms (plants and animals).
